If you’ve been dressing modestly for a while, you know that summer can be one of the most brutal times for dressing modestly. This is for a wide variety of reasons. However, the biggest one is that clothing that’s usually in style during the summer shows a lot of skin.

Even when you do find things that look like they might be modest and on-trend, they often have one big issue with them, too. For example, maybe you find a dress with sleeves at the store, but it’s backless. Maybe you find shorts that look like they’re long enough, but then they have holes that are distressingly high up on the legs, so they’re still not modest. Maybe the shirt you found has a nice high neckline but almost no sleeve. The list of examples goes on and on–and meanwhile, you’re still left wondering what the heck you can wear this summer.

This is a continuous thing as you shop every summer just hoping you might find something that works for your modest standards and is comfortable. That’s where we can help you. We’ve put together a few ideas for dressing modestly while being stylish and cool in the summer.

Embrace Airy Dresses as a Modest Summer Outfit Option

Dresses are a great way to stay cool in the summer! Modest dresses never really go out of style either. Ones like the Gracie Dress or the Katie Dress are great examples of this. Both of these dresses are 100% cotton and come in light colors. So, they’ll be stylish as well as light and airy yet modest.

Dresses are a great option because you can get modest knee-length or midi dresses that are long enough. They’re made of breathable fabrics and allow for more airflow, which can keep you cooler. Our dresses at Sweet Salt feature modest sleeves, necklines and lengths. Have a dress that’s too see-through? We offer slips to help with this, too! So, there’s no more finding summer dresses that kind of work for modest standards. Ours are ready to go with you on your next summer adventure.

Try a Pair of Modest Shorts in Your Modest Summer Outfit

We get it; modest shorts are hard to come by. Shorts are a summer staple, though. That’s why you need to look for Bermuda-style shorts in particular. You can get this style of shorts in different washes and hem types that you can dress up and down. While most jean shorts are going to be on the casual side, a darker wash and finished edge will look a little less casual than lighter washes and  frayed hems. For example, for a more casual look, our Frayed Hem Bermuda Shorts in a light wash are a great option. For a casual yet also polished look, we’d recommend a pair of shorts like the Denim Cuffed Bermuda Shorts

While lighter wash shorts are usually more in style in the summer, darker washes can be styled to work as well! The main thing is finding shorts that are long enough and don’t have so much distressing that you can’t be modest.

Layer with a Cardigan for Modest Summer Fashion

Okay, so a cardigan might not be the first thing you think of when you’re styling modest summer outfits, but cardigans can be an amazing tool when it comes to modest dress. We’ve all been there where we’ve found a dress or tops that we love, but it isn’t up to your modesty standards. If you have to have these items, you can always add a cardigan. This can add a bit of sleeve to any outfit. Before you say “no way,” you need to use the right type of cardigan. No, we’re not talking about big thick baggy cardigans that will overheat you. We’re talking about light cardigans in neutral or pastel tones that can add a pop of color and sleeve to your outfit.

One of our favorites is the Elsie. The Elsie comes in three different colors/patterns and can be buttoned up or left open. Since it comes in several pastel colors, it can be easily paired with dresses or tops to create modest summer outfits, even when you didn’t think it was possible for some items!

Classic Patterns and Colors Are Always in Style

It’s important to remember that though it can be frustrating that many summer styles might not be within your modest standards, and sometimes it can be tricky to find stylish options, classic is always in style!

While trends do change over time, certain colors and patterns of clothing have a more classic look, and they offer more coverage. For example, a striped shirt like the Poppy Top has good sleeves with a modest neckline and comes in a breathable fabric. Pair it with some wide-legged pants and cute accessories for a classic yet modest look that will still keep you cool in the summer.

The trick to finding these items is just keeping your eyes peeled and when all else fails, sticking to classic neutral colors when choosing modest summer outfits. Colors and patterns play a much bigger role when it comes to being in style than immodest pieces.

There you have it–some ways to dress modestly in the summer! Hopefully, these tips and ideas will help you plan out this summer’s modest outfits with much more ease.
