4 Ways to Match with Your Husband At Church
by ♥ Sweet Salt
Whether your husband likes it or not, you’d like to match with him at church. Some couples love being matchy-matchy while others would prefer to do their own things. Occasionally, you’ll get a couple where one loves to match and the other doesn’t. No matter who likes or dislikes matching, you’ll often see couples matched around the holidays. This is usually the best time to convince your partner to dress up with you. You might have gotten the green light to match your outfits, but you also might be scratching your head about how to do it tastefully. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
1. Match Your Dress to His Tie
This might remind you of formal dances from high school, but it’s a fun way to match. It’s also a pretty easy option that you can often throw together at a moment’s notice. Because this is a popular way to dress up for dances, there are many websites and brick-and-mortar locations that offer ties in every color and shade imaginable. You can even find patterned ties to add some dimension to your outfits.
The best strategy is to start by finding a dress or skirt that you want to wear. It’s much harder and more expensive to find and purchase a whole outfit to match a tie. So, establish your outfit first, then shop for the tie. You can then go to the store and find him a tie that matches. A white shirt for him will be the easiest to match, but you can also have him wear a black shirt or another fun color to match if you’d like. The outfit can get more complicated if you start changing around the shirt color too, but it can look so good if you get it just right. We’d suggest having him wear a black or blue suit to complete his outfit. These colors are neutral so they should go with your outfit either way.
2. Play with the Shades of Color
Another idea is to use shades of the same color to put together a matching outfit. For example, you might select a maxi dress with pockets in a shade of blue with white accents. Then he might decide to wear a navy blue suit, with a white shirt and blue tie. This can be a very stylish and classy way to dress up that lends itself to more formal occasions.
You can also go with a monochromatic look and both wear outfits that are all the same color. You can use shoes, purses, ties and hair accessories to accent or you can keep with the monochromatic theme. Just look at the outfits together to make sure they are exactly the same color or it might not work.
3. Incorporate the Same Prints Into Your Outfits
Do you love stripes, polka dots or florals? If you’re a pattern lover, this is the perfect way to match with your husband. Find a dress or skirt in your favorite pattern. Then, simply find him a tie or dress shirt in the same pattern. This look works best if you get patterns in the same or complementary colors (which we’ll talk more about later). This can also be achieved by wearing a solid-colored dress and having him wear a neutral suit with a white shirt. Then add accessories to the patterns. So, get him a patterned tie, and get yourself a patterned purse or headband. You can also play with your shoes and even your jewelry to pattern match.
4. Color Wheel Mixing and Matching
Another fun way is to mix and match colors with a color wheel. If you don’t know what a color wheel is, it’s a great way to mix and match shades and colors. There are a few ways to do that. Here are the best ways:
- Monochromatic - As we talked about above, this is where you use the same color in the same shade to match.
- Complementary - This is where you pick colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Have him wear one, and you wear the other.
- Split Complementary - Pick one dominant color for your outfits, and then incorporate two other colors that are directly adjacent on the color wheel.
There are other matching schemes with the color wheel. So, if you’re interested, it’s worth diving into and seeing if there’s another way you’d prefer to do it. The truth is, matching with a color wheel can be as simple or as complicated as you want. You can incorporate shades of colors and even think about the meanings behind the colors while putting together outfits.
Bonus Tip: If Your Partner Doesn’t Like Matching
So, what if your partner doesn’t like matching outfits? That can be a bummer if you love it. Try not to get discouraged. Maybe sit down with them and ask them if they would consider matching for a special occasion like your birthday or Christmas. Most partners will agree if it’s tied in with a holiday or special event.
Bonus Tip: Matching Your Whole Family
Matching your family at church can be so fun for holidays like Easter and Christmas. When you’re trying to match together larger groups, matching ties and dresses can be tricky. So, instead, establish a color pallet and find items for your family in those colors. So, if you want to do red and green, for example, start with red or green ties for the boys and white dress shirts. Whether they are patterned or in a solid color, it doesn’t matter as long as they are in the same shades of red and green. Then for the girls, find dresses in red and green. You’ll be matching, but not too matchy-matchy. This will appease family members and angsty teens who don’t love matching.
No matter how you decide to match, we hope you take a few pictures and make some fun memories in the process!
